Last week Borton Fruit participated in the MILLION DOLLAR MARATHON, a relay of marathons spanning the entire United States! This race has been organized by the public charity of ABOVE + BEYOND CANCER (http://aboveandbeyondcancer.org/) with a mission to reduce the burden of cancer across the globe. The American Cancer Society has determined that one-third of cancer related deaths are the result of poor diet and lack of exercise. The Million Dollar Marathon has been organized to educate the public about this issue through an event that is inspirational and motivational. Everyone involved will also be working to raise funds for cancer research and programs that support cancer survivors and their families.
This 4,000 mile relay across America started on June 21st in Ocean Shores, WA. One marathon at a time, the event will cross 15 states and more than 500 communities as the baton is passed from the Pacific to the Atlantic. On June 24th it passed through our town of Yakima, WA and Borton Fruit representative Eric Borton ran an entire marathon in support of this cause. Eric had never run a marathon before, but was inspired to be a part of the cause. He was able to finish the 26.2 miles in 4 hours and 14 minutes. His mother Barb Borton and brother, Matt Borton even joined in and ran a couple of miles with him in support as well. Eric and Borton Fruit have been working to raise money in support of Above + Beyond’s goal of $1,000,000 raised by the time the whole race finishes in on July 27th in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Borton Fruit has raised close to $4,000 dollars so far and is still working hard to raise more. Borton Fruit is proud to take part in such a great event that will have such a big impact. As a fourth generation family farm, the mission of the Million Dollar Marathon to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy Diet & Lifestyle is something that Borton Fruit strives to contribute to on a daily basis. Healthy living is important to us. It is exciting to be growing healthy products of Apples, Pears and Cherries that can have a positive impact on health and wellness.
In total there will be 160 marathons run. During this extraordinary journey, more than 10,000,000 steps will be taken. Ten million steps to honor the past and inspire the future. Ten million steps toward a cure. We are continuing to raise as much money as possible for the event.
