Yakima, WA – Borton Fruit’s Director of Marketing Jay Dyer just returned from the very first West Coast Produce Show put on by The Packer. The Expo was held in Palm Springs, CA at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa May 1st – May 3rd.
“This venue allowed for Grower/Packer/Shippers to engage with current and potential customers in a relaxed business format with many of the attendees from the West Coast and as far away as the Midwest attending” stated Jay. The Expo started out with a golf tournament and welcoming reception on Friday. Saturday’s events included a Retail Panelist setting from Northgate Gonzalez Market, Dan’s Fresh Produce, and Open Taste which discussed marketing principals and how they approach their specific markets and the opening of the Expo hall. The Expo finished on Sunday with their backstage tour of Jensen’s Finest Foods, Bristol Farms and Sprouts sharing the latest and greatest strategies on how they go to market in the Palm Springs marketing area.
The overall Expo had approximately 450 individuals in attendance, 210 being retailers – high level buyers and executives. “I thought the show was extremely relaxing in a way that made everyone comfortable. There is something to say about quality versus quantity when you work for a service oriented company like Borton & Sons” stated Jay. “The Expo had a very good mix of companies and retailers looking for ways of increasing their market shares. This year we placed an emphasis on who we are as a company by taking the time and sharing our Borton family history with everybody. On display at the Expo we merchandised our Premium grade of Apples and Pears in both bulk and bagged packs. As usual, the Honeycrisp Apple becomes the center of conversations with the exception of our new offerings COMING SOON! The Koru® and Rockit® that we show cased at the Expo. We are anticipating having the Koru® available come mid-May in a light way which is perfect timing for when we will be finishing up our Honeycrisp apples for the season. We think this will be the summer’s Honeycrisp replacement – being the Koru®. The Rockit® will be available around the first week of June. The Rockit® adds a little different flare being more of a gourmet type of apple, adding incremental sales and for those customers looking for convenience and unique flavor, check out the packaging! We also highlighted our soft net merchandising rack that gives retailers the opportunity vehicle to merchandise outside of the department!” he went onto say. Overall the show was a success and Borton Fruit looks forward to attending again.
