Yakima, WA – Borton Fruit is gearing up to receive our imported containers of 2016 Crop KORU® Apples out of New Zealand in mid-May. Borton Fruit, Oneonta and New York Apple Sales have an exclusive license to grow and market this apple in the United States. “We are extremely excited to reach more consumers this season with this chance-seedling apple variety that eats with outstanding crunch and great flavor” stated Sky Johnson, Sales & Marketing.
For those of you who have yet to discover this apple, the KORU® is crunchy, sweet, juicy, and aromatic with a honey like after-taste.
It all started from a chance seedling in Nelson, New Zealand in 1998. Where most apple varieties are bread through years of scientific testing, this apple tree emerged from a discarded Fuji apple that was thrown into a garden bed and naturally produced this tree of quality apples.
The New Zealand native who first discovered the new variety, Geoff Plunkett originally referred to it as ‘Kotabaru’ meaning “New Beginnings” and now this Plumac c.v. cultivar’s Fruit is being marketed using the registered brand KORU®.
KORU® is a Maori word representing a loop, growth, new life. In nature the symbol for KORU® is the unfurling of a fern frond.
Borton Fruit planted KORU® tree’s in 2014 here in Washington State and are anticipating to have locally grown KORU® apples by 2018.
